Choosing Smartphones With Expansion - By: Steve Mc Karmik

When we look at smartphones it is highly important to look at the specs. If you were buying a computer then you would never think to part with any significant amount of money without knowing how much RAM it had and what kind of processor was running it. The same goes for phones – especially when you're contracted into keeping it for 2 years – but very few people think to make the same checks.

One thing to check on a smartphone is the amount of storage it has. This is important as it is what will enable you to be able to save your files and that will mean you can store more music on it, run more apps, and generally get a lot more use if you have a bigger hard drive.

However even better than having a large internal memory is having a device that gives you the ability to expand the memory using an SD card. This then means that you can insert a 64GB compact flash card into your device and then have that much memory to play around with. This is such a bonus as very few devices actually give you that much storage normally – around 32GB tends to be the absolute upper limit for smartphones, with 8GB or 16GB being more common. At the same time if you have multiple 64GB compact flash cards this will then give you the ability to essentially have limitless storage – as you just swap the card depending on what it is you want to use your device for.

If this wasn't enough, having an expansion slot allows you to save a huge amount of money. If you look at the price differential between an 8GB and a 16GB iPhone you'll notice you end up paying a huge amount more for the larger device – particularly if you are on contract. This is because you will not be able to expand it with an SD card, whereas going for one that has the ability to take a 64GB compact flash card will mean that you can have four times as much space as a top end iPhone but for a much smaller upfront one-off investment. At the same time, when larger SD cards then come out in the future, you will be able to expand your memory further and thus keep up with the very latest devices.

At the same time though having an expansion slot gives you further use for your smartphone device. For instance it will right away allow you to store other files on your phone and that way use it like a portable hard drive. This also means that you will have the ability to use your file manager from your PC – which is very useful as some smartphones such as the iPhone do not come with one meaning that you can't fix bugs yourself or add or delete individual files etc. This will make it much easier to add music to your phone or to take it off, or to otherwise use your phone more intuitively and quickly. Those that do not have a file manager or SD expansion require you to 'sync' with each computer meaning that you can't get music off of a friend's computer for example. This also enables you to use your devices together more, so that you can take a photo with your camera and then view it or send it straight away with your phone.
