It was only recently we discovered that our telephone lines were not operating. To our annoyance we were told by BT that the mains line from the public highway had somehow become disconnected. There were two solutions to this problem, one was to reinstate the underground cable by digging a new track from the mains at the roadside to the side of the house where the Telecom line could be connected. The other solution, as suggested by British Telecom, was to erect a telegraph pole at our site entrance and run an aerial supply from the poll to the gable wall of the house just under the apex of the roof.

Neither solution was a practical option in my opinion but a telecoms employee did inform me of a possible new solution. He suggested using a process called directional drilling to reinstate the underground cable without causing serious damage to existing groundworks. I immediately consulted with a tunnelling contractor who specialised in modern methods of invisible drilling. He quizzed me about existing underground services ducting, my mains sewage outlet, and a public water course that undercut the entrance to my home. Having established all the technical detail required he was able to assure me that he could supply new underground ducting for a new telecoms connection without causing any damage to my site perimeter wall, tarmacked entrance and existing underground utility services ducting.

As I did not really want a telegraph pole stuck beside my entrance I was happy with the alternative method and was prepared to pay extra for this option. After a preliminary meeting with the prospective contractor I received a written contract proposal and was happy to accept the price quoted for the job. Two holes were dug by the contractor, one a launch hole just beyond my perimeter wall and the other a reception hole at the side of my house. Neither was obtrusive nor formed an obstruction and I was very pleased. The family still had complete access to our home and cars were able to drive onto the street as usual. The boreholes were quite small and through those the Telecom ducting was launched and received. Only a small directional drilling machine was used to drill a tunnel to house the pipe for the telecom cable.

The directional drilling contractor was able to curve the pathway for the ducting to avoid existing underground pipes for water and electricity supplies and sewage disposal to the mains sewage pipe at the roadside. This was an amazing feat and something I had never seen before. The most astounding aspect of the tunnelling process was the precision with which the ducting entered the reception hole at the side of the house. The project took only one day to complete after the launch and reception holes had been dug and that includes installing the plant and removing it on job completion. To my satisfaction directional drilling has proved to be an excellent choice in providing me with the best solution to an annoying problem.
