Choose an employer who gives you a free ski jacket - By: Nick Hurst

Sunshine and snow in the mountains is a winning combination if you like the smell of the fresh outdoors. There is something about snow in the sun that makes it look all shiny and picture postcard making for a magical experience when you’ve got time to enjoy it.

One of the ways you can get out to enjoy such a wonderful environment, other than just once a year, is to work a ski season. Of course there is work involved but if you choose the right position, such as chalet staff or ski guide, you get to enjoy many hours of fabulous snow fun. Another benefit is that often your ski pass is paid for and since the companies are likely to want you to advertise their ski holidays they will kit you out with a company uniform that usually includes a ski jacket. But do check because not all employers offer a ski jacket and some of them ask for a contribution that essentially says they don’t trust you not to run off with their precious ski jacket if you discover you don’t like the job.

A ski company that does offer a uniform inclusive of a ski jacket, without charging you for it, gives you a good idea about they way they trust and treat their staff and is worth investigating. If you do work for such a company then often they are well respected in the industry and you will find that you are quickly accepted into the local community as the locals know that only the best people who are responsible as well as fun are employed by them.

Assuming your employer is not one that insists you change, since you will need to be wearing your ski jacket as you go to and from work, you are likely to end up in bars and clubs still wearing it after work. Although probably safer than other ski jackets, you will still need to keep a weather eye out that it doesn’t disappear. It might sound a bit bizarre that anyone would want to take a ski jacket with a company logo on it but it does happen occasionally, sometimes because someone else has lost theirs and they are worried they’ll get into trouble. But don’t panic if you left your company ski jacket hanging at a night club or hotel lobby at night because there is a good chance it will eventually find it’s way back to you. Sometimes idiots, probably too worse the wear from après ski activities, ‘borrow’ the nearest ski jacket to walk themselves home in comfort and then just leave it in the lobby of the next place. Since your ski jacket has your company logo then the kind staff are likely to phone your company resort office and you can pop along to collect it wherever it ended up. A good employer will know what you need from a ski jacket and you will find that they are excellent for the daily ski and snowboard abuse you will put it to throughout the season, which means if you do have your own personal ski jacket you can keep that for best.
