Chocolate Tea and Immune Health - By: Kevin Agrawal

Winter is almost gone—even though the groundhog saw his shadow, we all feel it. The end of winter is coming. But just because the cold weather is on its way out doesn’t mean we should take our immune system or its needs for granted. And there’s an easy way to derail the annual “change of season” sickness.

Season changes can affect the immune system and may even cause bouts of cold and flu. This is because:
  1. Viruses, bacteria and allergens thrive for a longer time in cold and dry air. These pathogens find an easy passage to attack the body through the dry nasal mucus membranes.
  2. Lack of activity and increased appetite may lead to craving of sweets and starchy foods which are high in calories and fat with very little nutrients.
  3. Less sunlight in winter months may lead to depression. This, too, may lower immunity.1
  4. Lack of adequate sleep.

Staying Healthy is Easier than Trying to Get Well
If you know how to keep your immune system healthy, you better your chances for keeping healthy and well all year long..

Nature has provided us with amazing immunity boosters which people have been using since ancient times.

Historically, chocolate has been known more for its medicinal value than its flavor. The cocoa plants have existed since 1800 B.C. They were mostly grown in humid low lands of the Mexican Gulf coast of Central America. For centuries, chocolate was consumed as a drink, a frothy brew made from the cocoa beans. The ancient Mayans, Aztecs and early Europeans loved the drink because of its mild stimulant effect, which made them feel awake, alert and strong. The Spanish explorer, Herman Cortes wrote to King Carlos I of Spain in 1529 that “This magical drink builds up resistance and fights fatigue.”2

Drinking Chocolate Tea, a powerful combination of cocoa, green tea and resveratrol, is one of the best ways to support health and wellness.

Immune Boosters in Chocolate Tea
  1. Theobromine present in cocoa has a mild stimulating effect on central nervous system and produces a relaxing effect on the muscles. Theobromine is also known to suppress cough2.
  2. The flavonoids, naturally present in cocoa, help the immune system to be healthy. They do this by suppressing the compounds which cause active immune responses in the body.
  3. Resveratrol increases the number of macrophages (immune responders) in the body to fight against bacteria; Cocoa contains the amino acids, and tryptophan, which helps in producing the neuro-transmitter. Serotonin, which promotes positive feelings and reduces seasonal depression.
  4. Tea polysaccharides (TPS), one of the main components in green tea, stimulates the production of immune cells.3
