Chiropractic for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - By: Dr. Steven Read

Chiropractic treatment is known for its effectiveness in treating back and neck problems. However, other than these conditions chiropractors are usually adept at treating various other bad health conditions. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of such injuries for which, chiropractic treatment have proved beneficial for a significant number of patients. In my Ortega Chiropractic Clinic, I have had the opportunity to treat several patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Hair stylists, mechanics, truck drivers, carpenters and dental hygienists are some of the most common professions I see with carpal tunnel syndrome. Before we explain how we treat carpal tunnel syndrome, let’s explain what it is.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (RSI) and what causes it?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a repetitive stress injury (RSI.) The reason why it is known as Carpal tunnel syndrome is the structure of area affected in
this injury. Your wrist consists of the bones known as carpals that form a tunnel. Through this carpal tunnel, the median nerve passes to the hand. CTS is basically an injury in and around the wrist and forearm area that mostly occurs in dominant wrist. Rarely, it can also occur in both hands of patients.

Common symptoms of the disease being pain and numbness in the middle and index fingers, and thumb, tingling in one or both hands, weakness and pain shooting in the arm. Many times the pain actually wakes up a person at night.

How can Ortega Chiropractic Clinic help treat CTS?

Chiropractic treatment is one of the most effective for treating CTS. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the outcome of chiropractic treatment.
Generally, chiropractors use physical examination and x-rays for the diagnosis process. A proper diagnosis is vital in treating CTS. Some of the common

treatment methods, we use for carpel tunnel syndrome are:

Manipulation of arm, wrist and upper spine: Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments whose misalignment can result in symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome. Also, arms, wrist, and other area of the body are also adjusted depending upon the cause of the CTS.

Ultrasound: In ultrasound therapy, chiropractors use a device that emits high-energy and low-energy focused sound waves that penetrates deep into the body tissue. These waves which are outside the range of normal human hearing are very useful to relax muscles, and reduce pain and inflammation.

Laser: At Ortega Chiropractic we also use low level laser therapy in treating this painful condition. Low level laser therapy is the use of light to positively affect painful injuries.

Wrist supports: It is provided so that the wrist always stays in proper alignment and can be helpful in treating carpal tunnel syndrome.

Nutritional Supplements: We also use specific vitamin and nutritional supplementation to help assist the healing process.

Chiropractic treatment for carpel tunnel syndrome is one of the most effective and safe treatment methods. It is equally effective as other medicine, surgery
or allopathic care but with minimum side effects. The effect of treatment can vary from person to person depending upon his body and the severity of the CTS. However, whatever the severity of carpel tunnel syndrome may be, chiropractic treatment can be very effective in managing the condition.
