Chinese Dessert Recipes - By: ifood007

Chinese Desserts are not served in the same way as they are served in the Western cuisines as a separate dish after the meal. Chinese desserts consist of sweet dishes which are eaten with tea as a snack or are served along with a Chinese meal. Chinese meals don’t include Chinese Desserts on a regular basis. Typically a Chinese family ends its meal with a tinned or fresh fruit, indulging in proper Chinese Desserts only during festival and parties.

The long history of China clubbed with a plethora of cultures contributed to the wide variety of Chinese Desserts in the Chinese Cuisine. Candies or sweets which are called “tang” in Chinese are popular Chinese Desserts which are usually prepared with honey, malt sugar and cane sugar. These candies also contain nuts and fruits. Names of some Chinese candies are white rabbit creamy candy, tanghulu and dragon’s beard candy. Rice cakes are also popularly eaten as Chinese Desserts and are called “gao” or “guo” in Chinese. In Fukien speaking areas in China, rice cakes are called Kuei. Some commonly eaten gaos include bai tang gao, nian gao and tangyuan. Nian is prepared for the New Year feasts in the Chinese cuisine and is also called sticky cake.

Rice cakes are sweet rice balls which are chewy and soft. Jellies collectively known as “ices” in Chinese are also eaten as Chinese Desserts. Chinese jellies are generally fruit flavored gelatin products. A well known Chinese jelly which sets by itself is grass jelly. Another popular Chinese Dessert is “tongsui” or “tiantang”, as called in Cantonese, which are basically hot soups with a sweet flavor. Chinese soups are also known for their restorative and preventive properties. Another type of Chinese Desserts is baked confections which are prepared from wheat flour and are referred to as “bing” in Chinese. The fat that is generally used in the bing preparations in is lard. Names of some popular bings include sun cake, red bean paste bean cake and sun cake. Some Chinese Desserts which have picked up in the West include almond tea, eight precious pudding and peking dust. Even though Chinese cuisine is popular across world cuisines for its spicy stir fried food preparations rather than its desserts, Chinese Desserts still hold an important place in Chinese meals during festivals and parties.
