Children’s books are the best gifts - By: Brian Burton

Choosing gifts for your children can take a significant amount of time and energy. Trying to balance their interests with your rules as a parent can make birthdays and other holidays unexpectedly difficult. Although they might not be the flashiest items on toy store shelves, there is one type of gift that is always welcome by both parents and children. Children's books are versatile, interesting gifts that will keep their value longer than loud, trendy toys that break within a few weeks. By giving your children books, you are giving them education and entertainment, as well as offering a chance for your children to discover new worlds and exercise their imaginations and creative skills. In addition, books make excellent gifts for nephews and nieces and friends' children of all ages and reading levels.

Just as with any other gift, you should take each child's interests and needs into consideration when finding the perfect book. Buying a book that is below your children's reading level might make them feel disinterested, since children usually like to be challenged a little and know they are reading the same books as their peers. Buying books above the child's reading level might seem like a good incentive, but if your child cannot engage with the book right away, boredom or frustration might result. The best balance is finding a book that is either right at your child's reading level or only slightly above it so that the book will be exciting and produce a feeling of accomplishment. The best way to ascertain what level the child is reading at is to look at the books they are currently reading or have recently read. This will give you a good idea of what level at which they are reading. This can also give you an idea of what genres and subjects they are interested in as well.

While it is generally a good idea to expose your children to many books, for a gift, you can show how much you care by selecting a book that matches your child's current interests. Whether that means a funny science-fiction series or a historical novel, your children will be more likely to love their gifts if they are excited by the subject. They will appreciate your attention to their interests.

Gifting books is also a good way to bond with a child. If you read the same book that you gift to a child, the two of you can discuss the book together. You can critique the story or the actions and decisions of the characters. This can teach children to critically analyze what they read and make connections between ideas in the real world and in the stories they read. They can learn to see things from different perspectives and learn about different cultures as well.

A book is perhaps the best book you can give a child. It can be the gift of a new world or adventure or it can be a window into the life of an important person or historical event. This gift will also reflect well on the giver, showing their taste and their understanding of the child they are buying the book for.
