Children and Post Traumatic Stress - By: Dan Brathers

There has been a recent observation concerning over 110 children had been in traffic accidents. It has been discovered that 10% of children had post-traumatic stress after the event took place. It is widely known that most adults suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress but unfortunately many of these cases go untreated or are simply unrecognized.

One particular reason why many are not aware of any signs of post-traumatic stress among children is because they usually aren't able to articulate their feelings or experiences that they have suffered. Also, many of the tools or ways that doctors use to measure or find any signs of post-traumatic disorder are usually designed for adults.

The researchers decided to use various techniques designed for the children's age that could be used as far as diagnosing post-traumatic stressing younger children. This mostly involved relying on the parents to report how the children were dealing with it.

All of the children had experienced different kind of accidents before that have triggered the cause for their post traumatic stress. Some were pedestrians or cyclist that had been hit by cars; others were passengers in a car during an accident.

All of the children had visited A&E departments in London after a traffic accident.

Many of these children had been struck by cars and were only mere cyclists or pedestrians. Nearly 50% of the children had been in car accidents. Despite being involved in these accidents, the children only suffered from minor injuries. In an evaluation in the month after the accident and then six months afterwards, over 10% of the children had conditions that could be diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder.

These children would avoid getting into a car or walking near busy roads, and some would suffer from reoccurring nightmares and would extreme difficulty falling asleep. Most of the time parents or close relative are the best kind of therapy for the child to have.
