Children Having ADHD Possibly Will Have a Higher Risk for Adolescent Depression and Suicidal - By: John Neyman Jr.

A new study shows children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that is between 4 and 6 years of age are at bigger risk for depression and suicidal thoughts and action between 9 and 18 years of age, even after taking precaution or prevention to cause depression.

The problem with ADHD is either for short term or long term effect and it shows that it should not take carelessly. Some survey reveals that girls with ADHD from ages 4 to 6 are at higher risk for adolescent depression and suicidal attempt rather than boys with ADHD. The factors that cause a higher risk of depression and suicide attempts on teenagers are due to co existing emotional problem which is sometimes cause of lack of attention from the family members; and conduct problems cause by hyperactivity in their families when there are 4 to 6 years old.

A research study shows that with the combination of inattention and hyperactivity expect a suicidal attempt in adolescents with no depression while in attention problems expect only depression. The findings of depression and suicidal problems are depends on the detected symptoms of ADHD in children ages 4 to 6 years old. Furthermore, that depression is common co morbidity with ADHD and early symptoms usually mean that a person is likely to become depressed later in adolescence life.

Early referral is strongly recommended for children who have severe form of ADHD that is highly related with depression and suicidal thoughts and actions. They recommend evaluations which include: parent/child interviews, school assessments, a comprehensive physical examination, speech/language evaluations, and occupational/recreational therapy. The treatment includes health care providers and their families like family counseling for their behavioral problems at home. Some providers advise family to provide safety surroundings at home. Some of the children was given medication but not usually, for it may or may have no effect in long term, depending on the severity of the symptom.

Some doctors advise that primary health care physicians must refer families that have children with ADHD to mental health care who has training in cognitive conduct and behavior therapy with the families. The professional can assess thoroughly the child and the family also. On the other hand, emotional problems will be lessened and it will also help parents and other siblings to know the best way to handle their children with ADHD. Through this, children may reduce the risk of having depression and suicidal thoughts and action during their adolescents' life.
