Children, Rhinovirus, and Asthma - By: Dan Brathers

Infants who suffer from respiratory sicknesses with wheezing are likely to have a higher chance of developing asthma in their later years of childhood. It is unknown whether every kind of virus that causes the wheezing has a similar risk. Observers believe they have found rhinovirus after using different techniques to find viruses.

Rhinovirus is believed to be one of the major causes of colds and it also adds a bit of fuel to asthma development.

From mid-November of 1998 to May of 2000, researchers recruited 300 newborn babies that had a high chance of developing asthma to be included in a study concerning the causes of asthma. The children were observed between birth and the age of six and were analyzed for viruses especially those related to wheezing.

Nearly 30 percent of the children developed asthma and the children that had rhinovirus were included. It was noted that children who wheezed with rhinovirus during their first year were very likely (nearly three times as much) to have asthma during their sixth year. Children who suffered wheezing problems with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) had a decreased chance of developing asthma.

Children who were wheezing with respiratory syncytial virus at the age of two were over five times likely to develop asthma. This proves that the older child may be, the greater the chances to have asthma.

This observation ensured the earlier findings that wheezing with respiratory syncytial virus during three first three years after birth could lead to a huge increase of developing asthma. The most important finding throughout this is that wheezing rhinovirus sicknesses that occur during the first three years of a child were related with an even greater chance of having asthma by the age of six. Less than Over 85% of children who wheeze that have rhinovirus during their third year usually have asthma by six.
