Children: Home Remedies vs Over-the Counter Medicine - By: Dan Brathers

The usage of cough medicine has raised quite a few questions within the last few years. There have many cases of using these medicines illegally and there has been a major concern about its usage among children. It has been proven that cough medicine is very dangerous for toddlers and infants. There have been many children that have been taken to the emergency room because of overdoses. As a matter of fact, there has been a study that eventually found that taking a spoonful of honey was better at helping kids that were over a year old at coughing and going to sleep than taking cough syrup.

Because of this, it has been noted that children that are not the size of adults should not receive cold medicines or any other over-the-counter cough syrups.

There are plenty of other safe home remedies that can help your child if they are suffering a cold. It?s best to give your child plenty of fluids when they are under these conditions. Clear fluids such as apple juice are perfect, but be careful of using orange juice. Orange juice can help promote mucus.

Teas are always great as well. Teas that contain sage herb or ginger are very beneficial. Some Chinese medicines have also been proven to help out. Herbs such as mulberry leaf are great for these.

Humidifiers are also a great choice because they help fragment mucus. They also moisten the sore throats.

Cough drops (or lozenges) are great for calming sore throats. Be careful with these, younger children can choke on them. Zinc has been proven to be very helpful when fighting colds, so it?s probably best to have a cough drop that uses zinc.

One way for treating stuffy noses is to use a neti pot or saline drops. Another idea is to use suction bulbs to clean their noses.
