Childcare Jobs – Entry/Training - By: CardiffJobs

They say you should never work with animals or children, so being a babysitter in a zoo is probably the worst case scenario. If on the other hand you strive to work with children and uphold their wellbeing then no doubt you are looking into training for a career in childcare.

Should you choose to work in childcare within a nursery environment then becoming a Nursery Worker doesn’t necessarily require any official qualification, although GCSE’s are advisory in preferably maths and English. Other options include taking a full time college course or doing this part time and training on the job or even beginning as a volunteer and working your way up to reaching a paid position. Other positions such as becoming a Nursery Nurse requires studying for the National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) diploma which is awarded by the Council Awards for Children’s Care and Education (CACHE) which can take in the region of two years to complete.

To become a fully fledged Early Years Teacher requires qualified teacher status with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with a focus on early years. With this, candidates must undergo an induction programme to enhance their training which will monitor performance and progression as well as offer support, the duration of which is usually one year.

Alternatively, there is always the option of becoming a Play worker and allowing children to enact self-directed recreation working on either weekends or before and after school hours. Experience in working with children is generally considered more important than academic qualifications and training for the position is usually provided on the job which works towards an NVQ Level 2 and 3 in play work.

To be a Childminder requires registration with the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). In order to do this, prospective candidates need to attend a local childminding pre-registration briefing as well as taking an introductory training and first aid course and paying Ofsted a registration fee.
There are various opportunities for working in childcare and provided you have the training in place then there is no reason to stop you achieving this.
