Social anxiety is a strong fear of being judged or being in an akward environment. This fear can overwhelming and gets in the way of school or everyday life. This is harder to see in a kid.

When does social phobia start?

Social phobia usually starts during the child or teen years, usually at about age 13. It's only a problem if symptoms have occured for at least six months.Social phobia can last for many years.Phobias can be genetic or in the family, but no one knows for sure why some people have it, while others don’t. When a chemical imbalance occurs in the brain, it can cause the person to become anxious. That is why medications often help with the symptoms because they help the brain chemicals.

This is a list of common symptoms.

Children and adults with social phobia:

• are very anxious about being with other people.
• are very self-conscious in front of other people; that is, they are very worried about how they themselves will act.
• are very afraid of being embarrassed in front of other people.
• are very afraid that other people will judge them.
• worry for days or weeks before an event where other people will be.
• stay away from places where there are other people.
• have a hard time making friends and keeping friends.
• may have body symptoms when they are with other people, such as:
blushing, heavy sweating, trembling, nausea, and having a hard time talking.

The correct treatment can help all people with social phobia feel less anxious and fearful. But there is a lot of misinformation on the internet. There are drugs and methods of treatment that you may feel are not prudent in the treatment of child social anxiety.

Some Doctors are all too quick to label a child under the same category for treatment.
