Chicken Pox Causes, Symptoms and Fast Chicken Pox Cure - By: Dr. Lee Mikal

There is no cure for chickenpox and the virus usually goes away on its own without treatment.

However, there are ways to relieve the itching and discomfort, and there are important steps you can take to stop the spread of chickenpox.

Analgesics

If your child has pain or has a fever (high temperature) can be given a mild pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These are available without prescription in pharmacies. Always read the manufacturer's instructions.

Ibuprofen can cause problems for some children and adults, so avoid that if you or your child has:

1. Asthma
2. A history of stomach problems such as stomach ulcers

If you're not sure if ibuprofen is suitable, check with your doctor or pharmacist. If your child is under three months old, always speak with your doctor before giving your child have any pain relief.

If you are pregnant and have to take painkillers, then paracetamol is the first option. Usable in any stage of pregnancy. Just take ibuprofen during the second trimester (weeks 14-27 of pregnancy).

Staying Hydrated

It is important that children (and adults) with chickenpox to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. No sugar, Popsicles is a good way to get fluids in children. They also help relieve pain in the mouth that has chicken pox spots on it.

Avoid foods that can cause pain in the mouth, such as salty foods. The soup is easy to swallow, as long as not too hot.

Stop Scratching

Chickenpox can be very itchy, but it is important that children (and adults) not to scratch the future to prevent scarring.

One way to stop scratching is to keep fingernails short and clean. You can also put socks on your child's hands at night to prevent scratching the rash as they sleep.

If your child's skin is very itchy or sore throat, try using calamine lotion or cooling gels. These are available in pharmacies and are very safe to use. They have a calming and refreshing.

A stronger drug called chlorpheniramine may be prescribed by your doctor to relieve itching. It is taken orally and is suitable for children over one year old.

Cool clothes

If your child has a fever, or if your skin is hard and serious, to dress appropriately so you do not get too hot or too cold. Drops, plain fabrics, cotton are the best and help stop the skin from becoming sore and irritated.

If your child has chickenpox, avoid sponge down with cold water. This can make your child too cold, and can make them tremble.

Stronger Treatments

Antiviral drugs
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that is sometimes given to people with chickenpox.

Acyclovir may be prescribed for:

1. Pregnant women
2. Adults, if you visit your GP within 24 hours of the rash that appears
3. Newborns
4. People with a weakened immune system (body's defense system)
Ideally, acyclovir needs to start within 24 hours of the rash appears. It does not cure chickenpox, but makes the symptoms less severe.
Normally it should take the medication in tablet five times a day for seven days.

If you are taking aciclovir, you should drink plenty of fluids. Side effects are rare but can include nausea and diarrhea.

Immunoglobulin Treatment

Immunoglobulin is an antibody solution obtained from healthy donors. Varicella-zoster immunoglobulin (VZIG) contains antibodies against the virus that causes chickenpox.

The immunoglobulin treatment is given by drip. It is used to treat chicken pox, but to protect people who are at high risk of developing severe varicella infection. This includes:

1. Pregnant women
2. Newborns
3. People with weakened immune systems
In the case of pregnant women, treatment with immunoglobulin reduces the risk that the fetus is infected.

As the supply of VZIG is limited, only valid if a high-risk person has:

1. Been significantly exposed to the virus - significant exposure can be face to face with someone who has chickenpox

2. Been in the same room for 15 minutes with someone who has chickenpox

3. A blood test to confirm it has not had chickenpox before.
