People sometimes ask me if cheap rugs are a good idea for brightening up their children's rooms. They are concerned that their children might not like them, or that they might get dirty and messy. I am able to reassure them that cheap rugs are perfect for brightening up rooms and with modern day materials they are easy to clean even if your little darlings should want to use them for finger painting! You can even get chewing gum off them and they are ideal to protect an expensive fitted carpet.

So what sort of rug should you go for? Unless it is a nursery and you are choosing rugs for a baby, then it's always a good idea to involve your child in these decisions. Let them choose which cheap rugs will suit them. After all, they are an economical way to personalise your child's room and brighten it up.

Rugs are available with pictures and nursery themes drawn on them, but I find that these date very quickly and your child wants something more grown up. Girls like to choose colours that blend in with their own ideas. It is a bit of a stereotype, but many young girls still like pink and purple, and cheap rugs in these colour schemes easily give the effect that girls are looking for. They will also last for a long time if properly cared for.

Boys tend to be less involved in choosing colour schemes but will be happy with whatever covers their floor. Plain rugs are popular and easy on the eye, and many boys prefer them as they don't distract from the posters on the walls or the models around the room. As cheap rugs nowadays are easy to clean, they can withstand most hobbies which boys enjoy, so a bit of glue or paint on the floor, or dirt trodden in from football or games, isn't a problem. Drinks and food spilt on them can be vacuumed up and cleaned. You can even take their cheap rugs outside and hose them down in many cases, though check for colour fastness first.

Teenagers can be very choosy about what goes into their rooms and what suits them one week is outdated by the next. This is where cheap rugs can really come into their own. Without breaking the bank, they can have a new look for their floor in moments. Many teenagers I know have a profusion of cheap rugs on the floor, which are perfect to sit on and listen to their music, and this is more economical than buying them a complete carpet. With their bright up to date colour schemes and ranges of designs from traditional to modern, they can give your teenager the flexibility to create the originality which most teenagers crave. I even know of one who had his cheap rugs on the wall. This is to help to soundproof his room as well as looking good, so that he can listen to music without upsetting neighbours and his parents.
