Changing lives with disability lifts - By: Tom Jui

The requirements of disabled people in the work place has now become more focused thanks to building regulations and the Disability Discrimination Act brought out in 1995. What it does mean is that building designs have to take into account disabled persons needs, having a correct disability lift installed and kept in service for the disabled people in the UK.

There are many related products that will serve the disabled while allowing them to feel independent and able to get about in the home, office or a shopping area at will. Lifts are one of the most important amenities required in multi-storey building and there is more than one product that is available to make life easier for the disabled person who needs access.

There is the conventional passenger lift, platform lift or short rise lift that can be installed, depending on the design of the building in question. Some chairs were built for a single person to travel on the side of a stairway of a multi- storey building, referred to as chair lifts. However since the introduction of DDA, the use of platform lifts meets the requirements unless there are special circumstances.

Installing lifts in a building means they can be fit for a certain purpose and its current use plus, the future use of a building would have to be taken into account with costs at the time of installation. A disabled pupil at a school may require a lift that covers more than one floor. A short rise lift would mean lessons would not have to be taught on ground level.

Installing a short rise lift would not restrict a pupil in this way and would solve any future requirements. At DDA Lifts we are able to give advice on a range of lifts to meet your requirements.
