People going on chalet holidays look for their destinations to possess a range of characteristics.

Many tourists prioritise such things as the standard of the accommodation provided, the ease of access, the location and the price.

However, with global warming concerns rising in prominence, an increasing number of individuals may also take the green credentials of chalets into account.

With this in mind, Cedar House has opened its first Green Chalet, BCLocalNews reports.

The project commenced in the winter and work was finished on the building this spring.

Owner and operator of the chalet holidays firm Darrin De Rosa said he and his team are very proud of what they have achieved.

Among the eco-friendly credentials of the construction is its use of solar technologies to convert sunlight into usable heat.

There are also heating and cooling systems that are a combination of hybrid passive/active systems and rainwater is harvested from the roof to be used for irrigation.

Commenting on the building, Mr De Rosa said: "In the foundation, concrete blocks are laying on their side and under them is the two-inch foam board. Then on top of the cinder blocks the two-and-a-half-inch concrete gets poured creating plenty of thermal mass."

He added: "The concrete blocks were all recycled from an old foundation and transported and picked through by hand with the help of summer students. Ron Potter was one of the biggest helpers in doing this in the 90 degree weather of the 2009 summer."

Meanwhile, the businessman went on to state that he decided to pursue the project when a friend got him interested in passive solar heating.

The demand among consumers for more environmentally sound chalets is likely to grow over coming months and years as the issue of eco-friendly holidaying continues to gain exposure around the world.
