Spondylitis occurs as a result of changes in the joints of the vertebral column, mostly due to wear of the discs in between the different vertebrae, which in turn results in changes in the bones and tissues of the vertebral column.

The cervix or the cervical column, near the neck, is the beginning of the spinal cord. Degeneration and wear and tear of the discs in the cervical spine causes cervical spondylitis.

Cervical spondylitis is a degenerative disease that progresses with advancement in age.

Earlier on, cervical spondylitis was seen usually in people around 50 to 55 years of age. However, of late, there have been numerous cases where the patient age has been lower than 55 years, in some instances even 35 years.

It is a common cause of neck pain. It may be a natural consequence of aging in people over 50.Like the rest of the body, bones in the neck (cervical spine) progressively degenerate as we grow older.

We all experience a degree of degeneration in the vertebrae and discs as we become older.

But if the degree of degeneration is more severe, and causes more symptoms, than is expected for a given age, the condition is known to be cervical spondylosis.

As the 'discs' degenerate, over many years they become thinner. Sometimes the vertebrae develop abnormal growths or "spurs"(small, rough areas of bone) on their edges.

Cervical Spondylitis Treatment

Once a patient exhibits symptoms of cervical spondylitis, the physician usually asks for X-rays and an MRI of the cervical spine. The existence of the cervical spondylitic condition can be clearly seen on a MRI.

Once the diagnosis of cervical spondylitis is made, the next step is to start the treatment procedure.

There is no total cure for cervical spondylitis in conventional medicine yet. There are however different drugs and devices that can help control it.

When in the initial stage, a good way to protect the cervical spine from further damage and degeneration is to wear a cervical collar. A cervical collar helps to keep the neck straight and provides support to the muscles in the region.
