Celebrating with Halloween Costumes - By: Mr Robert

Ever since I was a child, I have loved Halloween and when we were setting a wedding date, and knew that it would be in either October or November, I made a point of choosing the 31st of October so that we would remember our anniversary easily. Even though Halloween was never a big celebration in our home, I tried to enjoy it as much as I could, and always found away to make cheap Halloween costumes for my siblings and wore my favourite Halloween costumes from the previous ones I had made.

Halloween is the modern derivative of “all hallows eve” which was the name given to the night before all saints or hallows day which was a celebration of the all the saints. The evening before was said to be the time of the year that was set aside for the remembering of the dead. It was thought that on all hallows eve, the barriers between the world of the dead and the world of the living were removed and the dead were free to roam around on the earth. This was the night when people would visit churches and graveyards to pay their respects to their loved ones who had passed away.

This explains why most Halloween costumes are made to depict things like ghosts, ghouls and zombies. This is not just to show a macabre side and to scare children, but as a throwback to the days when it was thought that if you looked like one of the creatures of the dark side, the real ones would leave you alone thinking that you were one of them. That is why some popular Halloween costumes include vampires, corpses and demons and some of the cheap Halloween costumes come with accessories such as axes, crucifixes and chains.

In America, Halloween is celebrated as a much loved holiday and people go all out to try and give the beat Halloween parties that they can, with the most successful deemed to be the one that scared people the most. The holiday includes children (and adults) dressed up in cheap Halloween costumes made by harried mothers, or more elaborate Halloween costumes bought from special stores. These children then go from house to house and demand goodies with the words “trick or treat?” with treats usually being in the form of chocolates and sweets and the tricks being quite harmless.

There are special decorations which are used to add atmosphere and make houses and shopping malls appear spooky and interesting. These include “Jack o lanterns” where a pumpkin is hollowed out and a lit candle placed in the middle, and various other ghostly shapes and models. To add to the festivities, there are games which are only played at this time of the year and which are enjoyed by both young and old alike. One of the most popular games played is called “apple bobbing” and there are special foods like toffee apples and cinder toffee for you to enjoy too.
