Causes of Sinisitis - By: rickymartin15

We'll be highlighting the two most common types of sinusitis in this article; acute and chronic and exactly what are the causes of sinusitis.

When the lining inside the sinus cavities start to become inflamed and begins to swell in size. As a result of this swelling the ostium (small drainage holes) becomes blocked and unable to provide proper drainage for mucus from these cavities.

When the mucus is unable to drain properly, it ultimately fills the sinus cavities and causes bacteria to grow causing an uncomfortable pressure to build in this region of the skull-this is sinusitis.

Sinusitis has become increasingly common and are the result is responsible for millions of doctor visits each year. It is treated with antibiotics, saline decongestants, and in some cases an oral steroid of some kind could be used too.

First, there is acute sinusitis, which usually brings with it more severe and painful symptoms but does not last as long in duration, maybe up to three (3) weeks.

Then we have chronic sinusitis, which has somewhat milder symptoms but lasts much longer-it can sometimes affect a sufferer from 3 months to up to a year or more.

Now let's take a look into some of the more common cause of sinusitis.

Perhaps you have heard this before, tonsil stones are caused by sinus problems infections and drainage or maybe you have noticed this on your own. If you are wondering how there can be a link between the two let us look at the reasons for this.

Tonsilloliths are simply formed by the presence of dead white blood cells, overactive salivary glands, oral bacteria, mucous secretions, including postnasal drip and residue from food. Although the absence of any one of these will still create tonsil stones it is almost always the case that all these will be present.

When a sinus infection takes place the most common symptoms are postnasal drip, drainage, and mucous. Allergies, the flu and a common cold also cause these symptoms that can lead to the creation of tonsilloliths. When the drainage and mucous gathers in the tonsil crypts or crevices they solidify and become the stinky tonsil balls we all know.

However, it should be noted that the presence of a tonsil balls does not mean that there is a sinus problem. In fact the infection may have passed and a few days or a couple of weeks later the tonsil balls will appear. It is often the case that people confuse which came first.

Chronic bad breath, which is also known as halitosis, may accompany a sinus problem. If you have a constant sinus problem, or post nasal drip, the mucus that is produced from this condition runs down your throat and accumulates in the back of your throat and on the back of your tongue. This is one place where the bacteria on the back of your tongue produce plaque. Plaque production causes bad breath. With a post nasal drip you generally have a thick phlegm in your throat. This phlegm may be infected.
