Cats are a natural carnivore and it is unnatural to place food down at all times during the day. Carnivores are hunters and leaving food down contributes to feline weight gain. Kittens on a pet diet require two or four small portions of quality pet food that is aimed at helping them keep strong muscles and joints.

Adult cats can have one or two portions of cat food with control over the portion size. Lazy cats will need less food while cats that play out and hunt for mice require a more suitable portion from their pet diet. We all know how cats crave mice and birds as a food source. As a natural source of nutrition for carnivores, mice and birds are a perfect diet for a cat.

Cat food that comes in portions makes life easier for cat owners as does indicating pet food in ounces rather than cups because this means you can see an exact weight rather than an estimate. Carbohydrates are more useful for dogs and humans as Mother Nature did not intend the cat family to be a consumer of carbohydrates. Most cats do not have any carbohydrate-digesting enzyme such as Amylase in their saliva to break down and digest carbohydrates that are fed to them. A meal full of carbohydrates will not sit comfortably in your pet’s stomach and can cause high levels of glucose.

To help a cat with their cat digestion the best pet diet includes feeding your cat with a meat based diet that is high in protein, moderate in fat and carbohydrates, low in salt and full of vitamins. To stop your cat from having an upset stomach, gradually change their pet diet over two or three days.
