Carnival Celebrated by Aruba Beach Villas Rental Agency - By: Smillie

Aruba - As Aruba's biggest and longest celebration, the island’s annual Carnival gives visitors and natives the opportunity to let loose and party. In 2010, the Carnival season is uncharacteristically long.

Since Easter is so late in April, the island's Carnival will continue until March 12th. This allows everyone to celebrate that much longer, observes Matthew Smillie, the proprietor of the Aruba beach villas rental company Aruba Villa Vacation Homes.

Many Caribbean islands and South American countries celebrate Carnival every year. Spread over more than a month, the celebration runs up to the start of Lent - in the same way as New Orleans' Mardi Gras traditions. Carnival music includes steel bands, Latin salsa, marching bands, Antillean tumba music, Calypso, reggae, Soca, and even Dutch oompapa bands.

During the Carnival period, visitors and natives enjoy fabulous floats, parades lit by torches, jump-ups (street parties), and the election of the Carnival King and Queen, explains Smillie, who provides vacation rentals Aruba. Elections also provide Princes and Jesters who keep the city's keys. In a Carnival competition, bands strive to be chosen to provide the Carnival’s road march theme song. Intricate costumes are everywhere and all-night dance parties are popular. Different parties take place on various parts of the island on alternating days, so everyone gets a chance to participate. Hotels, resorts, bars, and restaurants also conduct their own Carnival festivities.

"Carnival has many highlights, including the children's parade and a lighting parade - which features people and floats decorated with thousands of lights," observes Smillie, owner of an agency that rents villas in Aruba. Other crowd-pleasers include the Grand Parade (taking place the Sunday before Lent), a Calypso Contest, and the Shrove Tuesday Farewell Parade - which includes fireworks, a ritual burning of "King Momo” (an effigy of all that is evil), and a parade of old masks that signal the start of Lent.

The Carnival tradition was originally imported to Aruba by immigrants from Trinidad. During the 1930s, social clubs, including the Largo Marine and Pan-Am, celebrated with their own pre-Lenten costumes balls, says Smillie, owner of an Aruba villas agency. These celebrations increased exponentially until the festivities spilled onto the streets – with music and colorfully costumed celebrants - in 1945. Local history credits the Pan-Am Club with organizing the celebrations’ movement into the streets. The Central Carnival Committee Aruba was formed in 1954 to centralize Carnival festivities.

"Each year the festivities get bigger and fancier as Aruba tries to outdo itself," notes Smillie, whose company can organize an Aruba golf vacation. "Visitors always have a great time."
