Caring For Ankle Injuries - By: Tom Johnson

All medical advice should first be given by but not take the place of a doctor who will tell you when you have ankle injuries, however, there are some simple things that you can keep in mind to help your injury heal faster. If you do not take the time to care for any injury correctly in the first place, things could get worse and you could significantly delay healing. The ankle is tricky because it needs to be in great working condition for you to do everything from standing and jumping to walking and running. Without the use of only one ankle, you are pretty limited in what you can do and where you can go. Proper care will help you get your life back sooner.

Most ankle injuries happen by some kind of accident. Sometimes, you can use and abuse your body and it takes it, and other times it takes one small turn or twist to cause a lot of pain and damage. It doesn't seem fair but that is sometimes how ankle injuries happen. If you feel a twinge or burning in your ankle, even if you do not yet feel any pain, stop what you are doing and rest with no weight on it. Take off your socks and shoes to examine your ankle. Observe for any signs of color change or swelling. If you do not see any signs, and you do not develop any pain, you are likely alright, even if you think you twisted it pretty hard.

Often times, ankle injuries will swell up pretty quick, and you'll notice some bruising. This typically comes with a sharp or sometimes even a dul pain. If you can't step on your foot without feeling pain, do not walk on it any longer than you have to because it can aggrivate the injury or create a worse condition. Remember the acronym RICE. It stands for: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Before you do anything more, talk to your doctor about what you should and should not do after the initial injust if you can reach him or her. You can elevate the ankle and rest it if you have nothing else on hand, but do not administer any other medical treatment until you know more about what is going on if it looks or feels really bad. All injuries should be taken seriously and only trained professionals using specifically designed equipment can tell you what is going on inside of an injured ankle.

Ankle injuries that are considered to be relatively minor may be complicated if you walk on them before your doctor tells you that it is okay. A sprain usually heals pretty fast as long as you do not rush it. Remember that every ounce of your weight of your body will press on your ankle and putting that on an ankle injury before it is completely healed can cause a lot of damage and delay your healing significantly. No matter how insane it might make you or bored you feel , stay off of an ankle until the time is right to get moving again.

Sometimes, ankle injuries are much more serious and require a substantially longer healing time. Bones can splinter or mushroom. These are the most painful ankle injuries and the ones that take the longest to heal. At times, they sometimes never completely heal. If your doctor recommends you keep off of your ankle for six weeks, do not put any weight on it - even one day early. If surgery is recommended, it is likely because it is necessary for proper healing. Attempting to walk when you should not or turning down necessary help can mean a lifetime of painful walking, if you can walk at all.
