Cardboard Boxes are the Only way to Move House - By: Andre Issey

There is no reason to shell out for those fancy wooden boxes when you’re moving home, cardboard boxes make the perfect container and it’s more than likely that you’ve got some lying around. Plus they’re completely free so you can save some significant money too. It’s understandable that when relocating you want to keep all your worldly possessions safe and sound, but this does not necessitate the expense of wooden crates.

Most corrugated cardboard boxes are robust enough to keep your items securely contained. Of course it’s only common sense to wrap up fragile china, ornaments and decorations, anything that holds sentimental value to you or another family member should be rolled up in bubble wrap or surrounded by polystyrene foam. If you haven’t got access to either of these then collect some newspapers and magazines, it can be worthwhile to ask friends and family for any spare they might have, as they are an incredibly cheap and recyclable way to keep your items safe and secure.

When packing your goods make sure you tape the bottom of the corrugated cardboard box, this will prevent it from breaking and all your items falling out the bottom ending up in a heap on your front lawn before you can make it to the moving van. When packing the lorry with your boxes start with the heaviest, these should go to the back of the lorry and be the first layer, the lighter boxes should then be stacked on top. This system makes them more stable while in the moving van and easier for you to unload at your new home.

Remember to label your cardboard boxes clearly to avoid frustration when unpacking. Moving house is one of the most stressful processes to manage that families have to go through, so any little trick that helps it go smoothly should be embraced. If you’re really fancy you could colour code your corrugated cardboard boxes to indicate which contain clothes, kitchen utensils and children’s toys for example.

So next time you’re going to chuck away all your cardboard boxes, resist the temptation to just throw them on the rubbish heap, just flatten them and store them away until the day comes when you need them again. You’ll be glad you did when you’re panicking about moving house again, cardboard boxes will be the last thing you want to worry about and if you’ve taken this advice, then you won’t have to.
