Car wing mirrors checklist - By: Brigette Federico

Wing mirrors are often one of the components that can be overlooked when buying a car. However, regardless of the car type or model, car wing mirrors should always be well looked after and maintained.

Wing mirrors are not put on a car to enable someone to check their appearance for instance. The main purpose of car wing mirrors is to help a driver stay safe on the road.

Wing mirror glass should be kept in good condition and cleaned regularly. If the glass is dirty, or indeed if it has been broken through careless driving or vandalism, this should be replaced before setting off on a car journey. If a driver chooses to drive with one or both of the mirrors either dirty or broken, they could actually be putting themselves and others at risk.

It would be great if we all had eyes at the backs of our heads to see what other drivers are doing on the road. Of course this is not possible but the mirrors on the car can do this job for all drivers. When changing lanes on a motorway or when parking in a tight space, rear view mirrors can assist a driver in seeing what is behind them.

In bad weather, mirrors may need to be de-iced as they may have frozen up making it difficult to get a rear view of the car. In the same way, just as drivers are all different heights, the mirrors should be adjusted to a person’s own preference to ensure they have a good view of what is going on behind them on the road. Of course, this should be done before setting off on a car journey as a driver needs to have as wide a view as possible of the road behind them in the mirrors.
