When the car moves fast through the air it has to put in a lot of effort overcoming the drag force created by the air stream moving against the car. As a car user we may feel that this air stream works against you getting the best performance from your car. Which is true because the car's engine, specially at high speeds is required to do a lot of work overcoming the aerodynamic drag force.

As one can imagine at high speeds the control of the car is the most important. And all the controls we have for the car are made possible through the wheels of the car. So if we want to turn the car we turn the wheels. Through the wheels we are able to apply forces to the car which enable us to control the car.

Which makes the ride unstable at high speeds, and other than driving slower, we can't reduce the effect by using the wheels. At high speeds the aerodynamic forces also tend to be large and push the car in different directions including upwards. Again we are not able to counter these through the wheels.

Of all these forces the forces which push the car upward affect the stability adversely the most. And a car spoiler pushes a car down hard at high speeds and effectively counters these forces.
