These typically involve written exams that are then coupled with minimum standards of on-the-job experience to determine whether the individual can be officially certified. Once certified, individuals must continue to re-certify themselves over the course of their careers to ensure that they continue to maintain effective standards and applicable knowledge of ever-changing industry standards.

Nowadays, the vast majority of businesses that work on cars require their employees to be ASE certified. In addition, some individual jurisdictions around the country require all people who work on cars professionally to earn and maintain certification. This has helped make ASE the national standard by which competent and reliable professionals are both identified and recognized within the automobile industry.

Individuals who have become ASE certified are issued a patch that they are typically required to display on their work uniforms for customers to see. They are also issued certification documents such as an identification card that can also serve as proof of certification.

Even with this type of information readily visible and available, car repair can still be a difficult and frustrating process. Nonetheless, it is still made easier by being able to identify at first glance whether a mechanic or other auto professional is someone you should feel comfortable trusting with your vehicle.
