Capital Ideas for Finding the Ideal London Hotel - By: Kim d

Finding hotels in London is easy; with well over 100,000 hotel rooms in the Greater London area, even the pickiest of guests will be spoilt for choice.

Finding good London hotel deals on the other hand can be a little trickier, as that depends on what you value in a good hotel. There are 64 five-star London hotels dotted around the capital, so if you are looking for a top-quality establishment then picking a hotel such as The Ritz, The Langham or The Waldorf Hilton will not disappoint.

Most of the premier London hotels offer outstanding service but do tend to be quite expensive. Figures from 2008 suggest that London hotels are the fifth most expensive in the world for a one-night stay at an average price of £115 per night.

If you are not so focused on exquisite service then cheap hotels in London are available as well, if you know where to find them. London is divided by the River Thames and, as with New York hotels, there is a north/south divide.

New Yorkers argue over the merits of Manhattan versus Queens, Londoners argue over north or south of the Thames. The truth is that both North and South London have beautiful places and excellent hotels where people can stay – it all depends on what you are looking for in your hotel.

North London has the bulk of the premier tourist attractions including the West End theatres, St Paul’s Cathedral, most of the city’s top museums and most fashionable shopping districts, including Oxford Street. South of the river has Wimbledon, Kew Gardens, Shakespeare’s Globe, the London Eye and the Tate Modern art gallery.

South London tends to be less crowded and a bit greener than North London, which also makes London hotels in the south that much cheaper on average. On the other hand, if you are going to be travelling a lot around London to see the bulk of the attractions, then you will have to weigh the benefit of a cheaper hotel over the detriment of having to travel further in order to get to the cultural hub.
