With green issues still topping the agenda for so many companies, even with concerns about the recession, it’s hardly surprising that forward thinking executive are looking at how environmentally friendly their promotional merchandise is and how green are the promotional items that they send to customers, both existing and potential.

You don’t have to be a fully fledged green warrior to be appalled at the waste that surrounds some of the promotional items sector. But with a bit of thought it’s very possible to choose promotional items that not only promote your organisation but protect the environment.

Thanks to people such as the Body Shop, recycled paper bags are actually quite chic these days and many clients are happy to use them, reassured that they are helping the planet. Similarly, larger shopper bags, perfect for carrying brochures and other promotional items from exhibitions and then for use at home or in the office, can also be made in unbleached natural cotton.

Mouse mats are one variety of promotional merchandise that are consistently popular since they are so visible on the desk of the recipient. But if plastic does not appeal then go for something made of recycled paper or recycled polypropylene. These are available for printing using vegetable based inks.

The green agenda has caused manufacturers to think more creatively about what materials they use and, as a result there are some wonderfully funky versions of every day items around these days. The same is true of promotional merchandise – you can also found mouse mats made from recycled tyres.

Pens, for instance, always great as promotional items are now available made from recycled waste packaging while pads can come from covers made of recycled waste drinks bottles and cardboard. Even mugs are available that are made from recycled plastic – something that we can all drink to.
