Can You Hide your Ostomy? - By: Stuart Barron

For most people who have undergone ostomy, ostomy pouches are pretty obvious. You see it under your clothes when you look in the mirror. You hear every gurgle coming from your stoma, and you think that everyone else will know about them too.

But the fact is that most people will not notice ostomy pouches unless you tell them about it. While you accustom yourself with an appliance attached to your skin, there are a couple of way you can conceal your ostomy pouches and keep the noises at a minimum. Here are few ideas:

Empty the ostomy bag when it is 1/3 full. This way, it won't budge under your clothes. Of course, you will have to learn how long it takes for you to fill the entire bag so you save yourself from frequent trips to the restroom.
Check with your ostomy nurse for a pouching system or other products which can match your lifestyle. In many cases, you can get specialty products online.
If you are worried about the odor, you can ask your nurse or doctor for a pouching system which minimizes odor. This way, you won't have to be self conscious when emptying or replacing your ostomy bag.

Keep in mind that even after an ostomy, you can still whatever you want. There are even tightfitting clothes such as bathing suits that's made for people with ostomy. You should also try experimenting with different styles to determine which one fits you best. However, there are clothes which can be less comfortable. Tight waistbands and belts may feel restrictive over your stoma but you don't have to wear baggy clothes all the time. If you have to travel, you can consider carrying a statement from your doctor about your ostomy so you can also ask airport security screeners to respect your privacy during searches.

Ostomy pouches can change your life but they don't have to control it. You can get in touch with other people who have had ostomies to see how you can enhance your lifestyle after your operation. There are several message boards and communities online that can help you boost your confidence and allows you to get used to your pouch.
