Over the years, the pharmaceutical industry and the medical profession have come up with hundreds of ways of treating stress. Many of these ways involve the prescribing of one or more medications to calm the nerves.

A number of people, however, are uncomfortable with synthetic medicines for a variety of reasons. Some simply are naturalists who don't want to put artificial substances into their bodies. Others, believe that synthetic medicines are not as good for the body as natural ones. And, others, fear becoming addicted to these lab created medications.

Nevertheless, for whatever reason, more and more people are looking for alternative means of treating their stress. And, the belief that herbs can help is not that radical when you take into account that nearly all of the synthetic medicines in use today have their genesis in some form of natural plant or substance.

One of these alternative medications that people are looking at is herbs. Specifically, many people are looking the herb ginseng, which has a reputation for calming the nerves. The popularity of this herb is evidenced by the fact that supplements containing it are sold in thousands of health and grocery stores across the country.

Over the centuries, ginseng has been used to treat a variety of ailments. It has been used to improve alertness, promote a better appetite, improve the memory, improve stamina, and more. But, one of the primary reasons that millions of people over the world use it is to reduce stress and anxiety.

Because of its popularity in treating anxiety, ginseng has also been the focus of many research studies. Unfortunately, many of these studies have focused on the use of this herb to treat anxiety in conjunction with other herbs. Most of the time with positive outcomes. But, because most of the presence of these other herbs, it is difficult to come to a conclusion as to how much of the improved outcome was due to the ginseng and how much was due to the other ingredients.

In addition, much of the effects of ginseng on the body has to do with the quantity given. For example, some studies have shown that a relatively mild dose of the herb can induce calm in the body, but if a certain threshold level of the herb is exceeded, it will begin to have the exact opposite effect. This makes the dosage critical.

When buying ginseng, it is also worth keeping in mind that not all ginseng has the same active ingredients. For example, Asian ginseng has an almost entirely different chemical composition than Siberian ginseng. And, the same is true for other varieties of the herb. This makes it extremely important when buying ginseng that you look at the label and ensure that the ginseng you are purchasing is the one with the desired active ingredients.
