The truth is that there is a first time for everything so in answer to the question, “can anyone be an interior designer”? Yes you can with a caviat. That is that you must understand that the first time for anything is considered practice. In most lines of work and crafts, the first practice run is generally relegated to the scrap heap.

But you've been living in homes your entire life! Living right in the middle of what you're about to undertake. So doesn't that qualify you to some degree? The simple answer to that is yes it does, to some degree. About as much as the fact that you are the owner and driver of a motor vehicle qualifies you to be an automotive designer.

There are several problems that the novice tends to run up against in do it yourself interior design scenarios and the very first of these tends to be communication. They simply lack the required linguistic knowledge of techniques and materials to adequately communicate with materials suppliers and various workers.

So they do the best that they can by pointing at pictures and describing what they hope are applicable techniques that they may be familiar with but inevitably they come up short. Perhaps you can recall attempting to communicate with your mechanic when your car was in the shop? It's basically the same thing.

Another problem that the novice tends to run into, beyond their limitations regarding communication, is their general lack of knowledge regarding the variety of materials. Perhaps they have seen something in a magazine that they like but they don't have the slightest notion of what went into creating it. Just imagine trying to bake a cake if you didn't know what flour and sugar were?

This particular holds true today when it comes to paints and painting techniques. The problem with painting is that the paint supplier down at your local hardware store can make it sound all to simple. Who can blame him? He wants to sell you some paint and then sell you some more when you have to go through and redo your project.

Modern residential decorative painting has evolved in some quarters to the level of becoming an art from. In fact specialist in the area of decorative painting are highly sought after not just for their work but for their knowledge as consultants on projects. Perhaps you may have already seen layering wall painting techniques that involve colors and textures that are applied in succession?

However; the worst limitation to the would be do it yourself interior designer, is a lack of knowledge as it relates to general building and finish carpentry techniques. Even if they have an idea what looks good, they are completely blocked out when it comes to things like crown and base moulding. It's also the same thing when it comes to things like cabinets and counter tops.

Of course you can have crown moulding and cabinets installed in your project. However; in the end, due to your limitations when it comes to knowledge of materials, techniques, building framework etc., the finished results will be less than. Less than those that can be attained from a professional who's completely familiar with all options and knows how to communicate them in “exacting detail” to those who are doing the actual work.
