Can Affiliate Marketing be a success? - By: Andrew Davies

If you ask any Affiliate Marketeer why they do Affiliate Marketing the response will always be the same. To make money online. There are hundreds of opportunities being written about on the internet everyday which offer the most fantastic ways, if proven, of reaching success and your goals. Many of which don't work, might be scams, or are just plain too risky. Apart from the extremely low start up costs of Affiliate Marketing, before you decide that Affiliate Marketing is a business that you want to work at, I think it is important that you understand some points and accept that it isn't all cracked up to be what you want it to be.

Firstly, I'm going to be honest. I am an Affiliate Marketeer and I have made money online, and I am going to advise on a couple of points to ensure that anyone considering Affiliate Marketing knows exactly what to expect.

1. You can lose more money than you earn. Agreed, some affiliates earn huge sums of money, everyday, day in day out. But please note, not everyone does. If you intention is to make another income or to stop working it can be done but it will take dedication and perseverance.

2. You need to have some form of business belief. Most affiliates haven't a clue about running a business and when it doesn't work after several months, they give in. Business belief is all about trying and testing methods and concentrating on the ones that work and forgetting about the ones that don't. If you know something about business then even better.

3. You need to create something that is useful to visitors and concentrate on making that right before learning how to sell on your website. If you learn what visitors are looking for and how to sell, it is an investment for the future returns.

4. You need to know how to market other websites to generate a click through rate. You need to know how to make them click through to the merchants website. Text links don't click through, visitors do and therefore without understanding how to generate a click through you won't get near to earning a commission. Think - as an Affiliate you are an extension of a self employed sales member.

5. Don't think that one site is going to make you a fortune. In 99.99% of cases it won't. Yes, there are the odd one here or there but it takes the site owners months if not years to get to that stage. Often to make the big bucks you need multiple streams of income.

6. You need to learn about low maintenance sites which attract visitors and promote them and duplicate them. If one site doesn't work, leave it and duplicate a site that is working even if it is only creating a small return.

7. Working on your own can be hard. You need someone to help you with ideas, suggestions, reviews etc of your sites. 2 brains are better than 1 and therefore use someone who is already successful at it. Spend time researching the net to find out who these people are. Join forums and mailing lists to get free information and suggestions.

8. Finally, have belief and persistence. Affiliate Marketing is not for everyone. In the first 6 months of running my own site, I made $26. However, after doing more research, reading and dedicating time everyday to building my sites reputation, and having accurate time management planning for my site, I have seen positive changes and I'm making money.

Personally, I don't have the exact answer on how to be successful with Affiliate Marketing. However, I do know that I have made common mistakes and have been blinded by signs of money. Accept that it isn't immediate and the start is often slow but you will be successful using as many resources and suggestions that are proven.
