Camping in San Diego - By: Bryant Ford

If you long for perfect Mediterranean weather on your next camping trip, look no further than San Diego as a destination. The breezes are cool in the summer and balmy in the winter. The Campgrounds in California range from oceanside to mountaintop; your camping choices even spread out to the wild, lonely desert but many people say camping in San Diego just can’t be beat. If you long to be among fun-loving crowds or out in the back of nowhere, there is a campground in San Diego suited for your tastes.

First decide what type of setting you want for your camping trip. Do you want a luxury San Diego RV Parks with all the trimmings? Or a primitive tent campground where your focus will be on the scenery and wildlife? You can wander alone on the beach, or people watch along the entertaining, bustling boardwalks. Maybe you'd prefer a setting near a historic downtown area where you can window shop and visit wineries?

For the beachfront and bayfront campgrounds, it's usually best to make a reservation with plenty of advance notice. These tend to be the most desirable campgrounds and/or RV parks in San Diego. It's worth taking the time to explore these beachy campgrounds at least once, however - how often do you get to raise your head off your pillow and look into the rolling waves of the ocean?

You will have better last minute luck rolling into an inland campground, but that can be lovely too. There are rolling granitic hills to camp in near San Diego's Wild Animal Park, pine-clad mountains for camping in Julian (best known for fall festivals and apple pie), and the entire Anza Borrego Desert to roam in - our nation's largest state park. If you choose the desert, keep your eyes open for wild herds of mountain sheep and vast acres of stunning springtime desert blooms.
