CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK AND HAVE A WONDERFUL 2010 - By: Melissa Marcy

It seems like everywhere I turn lately people are telling me how awful 2009 was and how happy they are that it is over. Many even went as far as to say that it was the worst year they had ever experienced. It is true that many people have lost a great deal of their “stuff” over the past few years… jobs, homes, possessions, self worth, etc. and I understand how awful that feels. If you want that all to change though, you need to first make some changes within yourself.

“Last year was horrible though,” I hear you say. Well, so what? Whether you just took a few steps back last year, lost some of your savings, racked up some debt or are one of the people who lost everything doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. Go ahead and have a good cry about it and when you are finished crying come back to reality and focus on the positive. I am sure there are some of you cursing me right now for even daring to bring up the word “reality” because you think that reality sucks and you don’t want to face it. You probably don’t even want to hear me mention it.

The reality is, however, that you are being given a second chance. It may not seem like that right now… but that is what it is. First and foremost, if you are one of the people who lost all of your “stuff” just please remember that it is really all just stuff… you didn’t lose anything important because your possessions don’t make you who you are. Instead of grieving over those things, be grateful that they are no longer a burden to you. From here on out you are no longer tied down by them and you can literally do anything and go anywhere. Congratulations!

If you lost your job and are one of the many people out there who just can’t seem to find a new one, maybe it is time for you to take a seat and think about what it is that you really want. Were you happy in that old job to begin with? Is there something else you could do instead that would make you happier? Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try? Well, if you’re current “career” isn’t hiring than why not give it a go and see where it takes you?

Instead of focusing on where you are right now, focus on where you want to end up. When was the last time you really thought about what you wanted? Most of us go through our day to day lives thinking about what we think we need to get by, but we don’t take time to think about what we want. Now is your chance. What would the picture of your perfect life be if you could choose anything you wanted. What kind of life would you create for yourself if there were absolutely no restrictions, roadblocks or difficulties. What would that picture be? Where would you live? What would you do every day? How much income would you have? Where would you travel? What would you do for fun? How would you look? In reality there are no limitations other than the ones we place on ourselves. Regardless of where you might be or what position you might think you’re in right now, open up your mind to the possibilities of where you want to go and then plan for that. When you know what you desire, it is much easier to have a plan of action to get there.

Often the things in our life we see as obstacles are really just reminders for us to take a closer look at not only where we ended up, but where we are headed. When you hit a roadblock you can either act out of impulse, spin your wheels and get nowhere, or you can take a moment, regroup and find another way. There is always another way.

Focus on what you want, stay positive and make 2010 your best year yet
