Buying the Prom Dress for Your Body Shape - By: Art Gib

The night that high schools girls look forward to most of their school career is quickly approaching. This night is, of course, the night of prom. It's a major event for teenagers, almost like a necessary rite of passage. Because it is such an important night, school girls take great pride and care in their appearance for the night, and in choosing the perfect dress for the event.

About this time of year you start to see prom dresses popping up in most department stores. You'll notice every style, shape and color. The problem is, not every style will work for every girl. To make sure you get the dress that is most flattering to your body shape, keep in mind these few tips.

Heavy patterns on a dress will add bulk to your body. Now, this doesn't mean it will make you look unnatural, but it will accent your curves. So, if you are already a curvy girl it is best to stick with a dark, solid color. On the other hand, if you have a shape that is more straight than curvy you may want a patterned dress. This will help create the illusion of curves.

Don't highlight your full areas. Some women naturally have a bigger bust or wider hips. While these can be absolutely stunning in the proper dress, they can be almost overwhelming if they are over-accented. For a woman blessed with a large bust a simple neckline will be the perfect accent to her body. For the hips, shy away from ruching or lots of frills and flounces in the hip area. A sleek look will work better for you.

Let the dress create an illusion. This may sound strange, but prom dresses are frequently used to give the illusion of a slimmer waist, fuller hips, or even to shorten and lengthen the body. This is something you should absolutely use to your advantage.

A thick belt around the waist will slim the waistline; a knee-length, bell style skirt will give the impression of curvy hips, as will any ruching or bows at the hip line. A form-fitting, long dress or a train on a dress will lengthen the body, as will a good pair of stilettos. These illusions can make your body go from great to fabulous!

The basic idea behind these rules is to highlight and accent your body, not take away from it. If you keep them in mind while shopping for your dress, you will find something magnificent and on the night of your prom, you'll look stunning.
