Buying an Air Purifier - 3 Dos and Don'ts That Will Help You Bring Home the Best Purifier - By: Debbie Davis

An increasing number of people spend the majority of their time indoors, so more and more people are using air purifiers to keep indoor air quality as fresh and healthy as possible. Even though they have been available for a number of years, they are now becoming more popular with the general public because of a healthy change in lifestyle.

An air cleaner is a proactive and relatively inexpensive way to reduce airborne allergens and contaminants that accumulate because of our well insulated spaces. Clean air is important for everyone, but particularly for those people who suffer from allergies, asthma, and/or other existing respiratory conditions.

Purchasing an air purifier can be daunting. There is such a wide variety of models available with a so many different features in every price range; it can be overwhelming to try to make a decision. And which features are best for your situation? You should consider a number of factors when it comes to purchasing a good air cleaner besides the cost that is involved. Here are 3 things to do when deciding on a purifier.

1. Match your square footage with the square footage of the cleaner. Proper sizing of the air cleaner is a make or break factor. This will ensure that you are not wasting your money in the process.

A machine that is too small to get the job done is one that you won't use because it is ineffective, or one that you will spend more money to replace for the same reason.

2. Choose a HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) air purifier that by definition will remove particulates as small as microns with 99.97% efficiency. The best HEPA purifiers for home and office use also have an inner filter that can remove gases such as odors, smoke, and chemicals.

3. Compare filter costs as well as the life of the filter. A cleaner who needs a filter change every 6 months will significantly add to your cost for cleaning the air. With normal use, expect a filter to last at least 5 years. This means you will spend less time and money on your cleaner.

Here are 3 things not to do when deciding on an air purifier.

1. A secondhand air purifier is not always a wise idea. You don't have a guarantee about the condition. You also may be buying a unit that is no longer under warranty with the manufacturer, so any repair is more costly than buying another unit.

2. Buying an air cleaner that does not have a HEPA filter can mean that your air is not being cleaned as thoroughly and efficiently as possible. And without being sure that you can buy a replacement easily, your purifier is defunct and no longer serviceable when the filter is full.

3. Choosing an air purifier that does not remove the pollutants that are a problem in your air is a waste of money. For instance, if you need to remove pet urine odor, but the purifier you bought cleans smoke, you are going to be disappointed with the results. Match the pollutants you need to remove with an air purifier capable of eliminating them.
