Buying a New Iron Buyers Guide - By: S.Roberts

Before 1905 all garment pressing was done by hand irons that were heated up over a fire or on the stove. Henry W Seely patented the electric iron in 1882, but it took some time before the electric iron became an every day household item. Of course nowadays, electric irons come in a variety of shapes, sizes, types and styles, and its hard to know which to choose when you are choosing a new iron, so here are some tips and pointers about the types of irons available today.

As with most things, the more functionality the iron has, the quicker it breezes through the ironing, and no one likes to be ironing for longer than they need to.

Dry Iron
The dry iron as its name suggests is an iron that simply heats up and relies solely on temperature to iron the clothes, in a similar way to the old fashioned hand irons. These irons don't make light work of ironing, but they were popular in the early days because it was thought that mixing water with an electrical appliance was a bit of a hazard.

Steam Iron
The Steam iron has a water reservoir, which enables the iron to produce steam continuously during ironing. The stream helps to iron out the creases that a dry iron would struggle to achieve.

Steam and Spray Iron
These irons have the steam feature which speeds up the ironing process, but it also has a spray too. When you find a stubborn crease in the clothing you can press a button on the iron and a spray of water from the reservoir is squirted onto the cloth. Wetting the crease can help to iron it out, and the water soon dries with the iron running over it.

Steam, Spray and Shot Iron
This iron has all the features of the above iron and it also has an additional button to blast out a shot of steam. When the spray method fails to iron the crease completely you can blast steam onto the crease which will remove the stubbornest of crumples.

Steam Generator Iron
Offering the best results in the fastest time is a steam generator iron. As the name suggests, this iron allows you to apply a constant flow of high-pressure steam for all of the items you wish to iron.

Cordless Iron
The cordless iron is helpful if you have to iron lots of shirts and find that the cord is rather restrictive when ironing. The cordless iron has a base with a cord that is plugged in to an electrical socket, and the iron sits on the base to heat up. When the iron reaches temperature a light indicates that the iron is hot, and you can start to iron. When you are ready to move the garment to iron another area, you return the iron to the base where it heats up ready for the next use.

Non-Stick Irons
Have you ever had you iron a bit too hot when you wanted to iron something that required a cooler iron? The cloth melts and sticks to the iron and you send the next half an hour cleaning the irons plate - Very frustrating and time consuming.

The non-stick iron has a coating of non-stick, a bit like a Tefal frying pan to stop melted cloth from sticking to the iron plate.

Ceramic Plate Irons
Ceramic discs are used in breaks for sports cars, this is because the can withstand high temperatures and they disperse the heat. Ceramic plate irons offer an excellent alternative to stainless steel. Ceramic plates have a durable, non-stick surface and it distributes the heat well offering a smooth gliding action over the clothes as you iron.

Anti Lime Scale Irons
Anti lime scale iron are particularly beneficial to those people living in hard water areas. As with any water heating device, over time lime scale develops, this build up in time starts to fragment and more to other parts of the iron and so clogging it up so that the iron can no longer work effectively. Anti Lime Scale irons have a built in water filter to prevent this from happening, and so can save you money if you find that you are frequently buying new irons because you old one is damaged by lime scale.

This alternative to buying an anti lime scale iron would be to only use filtered water or ironing water in your iron.
