Buying a Kids Coat - By: janehull

Whenever I am looking for a specific product I always start thinking that I will be able to pop to the shops and get what I need, but that is never what happens.

The other day I needed to get a kids coat, a simple task you may think and as my son is a bit older we have had a lot of experience with coats. But believe it or not the slightest detail can make all the difference.

He is not one for thick coats as he doesn’t really feel the cold and he wears it over several layers for school so it had to be lightweight, flexible and waterproof.

First of all, never go shopping for this kind of item in the sales, it’s not that we wanted a cheap one; it just happened that this was the time he has grown out of the old kid’s coat. Anyway out of the sale ranges there were very few in his size and the new ranges weren’t in the shops yet, so that put the dampeners on it to start with, leaving us with very little choice.

When we did eventually find some, we had problems with making the assistant understand that we didn’t want a rain coat, we wanted a lightweight waterproof kids coat. Once she understood we were shown a waterproof coat with a zip out fleece lining. Well, we have been down this road before, has the person who designed this coat ever actually tried it on? Because the sleeves are only attached at one point to the coat, so it never sits flat against the outside layer. It’s difficult to get on and very uncomfortable. Anyone who has children knows that if something is uncomfortable it will cause months and years of hassle because your child will constantly complain about it and quite right too. As adults we wouldn’t buy something and wear it if it was uncomfortable so I can understand his feelings.

So we said a flat no to that suggestion without even trying it on, my son tried on a few other coats but either the cuffs were too tight or it didn’t really fit.

We went home having tried on nearly every kids coat, but came out empty handed. My son and I both agreed it was better to wear his coat that was getting too small for now and keep looking for a kids coat than to buy one that was totally wrong. I am not a keen shopper and neither is my son, so we are not really looking forward this, but I plan to do some online research before we go so that we can be more targeted in our approach as to where we go. I am hoping that this will make it a lot easier, but really you wouldn’t think it was a difficult task to accomplish in the first place, how wrong we were!
