For many young people, buying their first car is a very special event in their lives. It presents a level of freedom never previously available. The ability to get in the car and go wherever you want without having to rely on anyone else is always an exciting prospect. Everyone who gets to this stage, young or old, will have a different budget and different needs. However, there are a few things that should be considered by everyone regardless of the circumstances in which you are buying. This article aims to go through a few important considerations with a view to helping you choose and buy your first car.

Insurance

Insurance is possibly the dullest aspect to purchasing a car and no-one really wants to spend too much time thinking about it. However, if you are buying your first car then this is a really important consideration as first time drivers regularly pay well over £1,000 per year to insure their first car. In the UK, cars fit into insurance bands from 1 through to 20. If your car falls into band 1 it is seen to be of low risk and if it lands in band 20 then it is seen to be of high risk. It's well worth trying to find out what band your preferred car will fall into before you part with any money. Be aware that different models of the same car can fall into different insurance bands, so check this out properly and don't guess!

Performance

If you are new to driving then it would be wise not to overstretch yourself in terms of power. For most people this isn't really an option due to budget limitations, but if you spot a nice looking sports car that's within your budget, it might be wise to think twice. Young males are particularly likely to suffer from a serious road accident, so save yourself from being a statistic and learn to drive in something that won't plant you straight into the nearest ditch. Avoiding rear wheel drive is also a wise move for the inexperienced driver as they can give you the odd nasty surprise.

Maintenance

Car maintenance is something that all new drivers will have to get their heads around. Whether you plan on doing some work yourself, or you just want to put it in the garage it is important you understand a few basics. Before you buy a car, it's well worth checking out service and repair costs at a few local garages. Some cars will be incredibly expensive to repair, whilst others will be relatively cheap. Try to make sure you check how often your car needs servicing and stick to it, as this will save you quite a few problems.

Don't Buy A Wreck!

If this is the first time you've been car shopping, the chances are you probably won't be 100% clued up on what to look for. First time car owners are particularly vulnerable to buying a wreck, and that could end up costing you a fortune in garage bills. The easiest and best way to avoid this is to take someone with you who has experience in buying cars. Always seek as much advice and information as possible, the worst thing you could do is rush into a purchase.
