However, if you try to tell that to the account executive, whose first impression of you might be of your tie, then think again. Whether you want to believe it or not, in everyday life we often times do form our opinions of other people by the clothes that they choose to wear. For a man who finds himself in all kinds of everyday situations, then it is the necktie more than any thing else, that will determine how others view his status, confidence, personality, and credibility.

The first thing you need to consider when you are buying neckwear is the length of the tie. One that is either too long or too short can immediately spell disaster for the man wearing it. When tied properly, your tie should come upto your belt buckle when you stand straight up. The right length of tie for you is a function of your height, and the sort of knot that you plan to use. Standard lengths are either fifty five or fifty six inches, as a rule.

The width of a tie is the next thing to consider, and while fashion seems a little fickle when it comes to the proper width of a necktie, a good rule of thumb is to always err on the side of caution. You will never want to go too wide or too thin.

Next, think about the material. It needs to be strong enough to make a good knot, and this strength typically comes from the lining of coarse fabric that is sewn into the lining of most ties. Silk makes the best kind of tie, but without a good lining, silk neckties can be too thin to make credible knots. Neckwear made from a fabric that blends silk with polyester can also be nice. It is also known that ties are also commonly made from wool or cotton, although those fabrics typically do not wear quite as nicely.

Perhaps, the most important thing to focus on when you are choosing neckwear is the type of pattern. The different styles and designs and patterns might seem a little bit overwhelming, but if you are trying to make a good impression on someone, then there are only a few things to remember. The most obvious pattern is a lack there of, which means that you can never go wrong with a solid tie. Of course, this is assuming that it actually matches your shirt and coat. Other patterns may include stripes and polka dots and all kinds of logos, cartoon characters, and even landscapes are available in the market today. Some neckties are obviously designed with nothing but fun in mind. They might be great at a family reunion, but you should think twice about wearing them in the board room.
