Buying Bed Linens - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Some people find it difficult to choose bed linens that are perfect for their needs and preferences. On the other hand , if you know what to look for, it would be easy to pick out the appropriate linen for you. Some of the factors to consider when choosing or buying linens include the kind of fabric, thread count, hypoallergenic property, size, and color.

Linens are available in different fabrics. These fabrics can be natural or man-made. Natural fabrics include silk, bamboo, hemp, flax, and cotton. These fabrics are also known as organic or environment-friendly fabric since they are produced from raw material without the use of chemicals or fertilizers. If you are an allergy sufferer, you can be assured that organic fabrics are hypoallergenic. On the other hand, linens made from organic or natural fabrics usually get wrinkled in a short period. Another option is to go for man-made fabrics. Man-made fabrics are made from a combination of synthetic and natural materials. Polyester is one example of a man-made fabric.

The following are short descriptions of different fabrics that you can choose from when buying linens:

- Silk – If you prefer to have a royal feel in your bedroom, silk fabric linens are perfect. Most silk linens have appliqués, patchwork, and embroidery for added elegance and style.
- Cotton – If you prefer softness and comfort, cotton fabric linens are the best for you. You can purchase 100% cotton, Egyptian cotton, or Pima cotton among others.
- Satin – If you want to avoid slipping of your linen under your bed, it is best to choose satin linens. These linens are rough from one side and smooth on the other. The rough side would rub against your body to avoid slipping. More so , satin linens provide an elegant look on your bed.
- Polyester – If you want a substitute for cotton linens, it is best to go for polyester linens. Polyester comes from a combination of 2 or more fabrics. These linens dry up easily.
- Flannel – If you prefer to feel warm and soft in bed, go for flannel linens especially during winter or cold seasons. More often than not, flannel linens are integrated with ribbons and laces to spruce up your bed.

Thread count is another factor to consider when buying linens. Thread count determines the softness of the fabric. It measures the number of threads in a square inch of a fabric. In general , the thread count of linens ranges from 80 to 1,200.

If you are an allergy sufferer, it is advisable to pay for linens made from silk or other natural or organic fabrics. Buying linens that are coated with chemicals can trigger allergies.

To conclude , the colors of bed linens are also factors to consider. Linens are available in various colors going from dark to bright and natural to light. The colors of your linens depend on your personal choice. However, you should make sure that the colors match other aspects in your bedroom include pillow covers, furniture, rugs, curtains, and other room decors.
