The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is a good place to introduce kids to more 'adult' art in the form of paintings, sculpture, photographs together with historical artworks. The museum contains a scavenger hunt for younger guests that helps them explore the museum and discover objects along a specific theme. The museum also offers a monthly family day where they feature activities and more interaction for families. There are three floors and numerous galleries to help explore so it is a good idea to plan ahead for rooms to avoid and rooms that 'must' remain visible.

The second floor contains artwork from world wide. The jade carvings from China are fascinating. There are also artworks from other portions of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and also the Pacific Islands. Some exhibits could be more interesting than others, according to the interests of the friends and family.

Third Floor Galleries

The 3rd floor of the MIA has the period artwork. This comes with paintings, sculpture and a few interesting art deco work. The floor has galleries around impressionism, modern design and expressionism for those who want to see a unique type of art. These galleries may be particularly fun to visit within a family day.

Family Trip to MIA

Month after month the MIA holds a family day with a theme. In the fall it usually is a simple autumn theme or if there is a visiting exhibit they will often theme around that. One recent example was some sort of knights and castles idea. Each child has some sort of scavenger hunt with a listing of items (including pictures) to find. The items are quite often not the entire work of art but a portion so they need to look for it. These scavenger hunts really can get them interested in what they're just seeing and why all of the items on the list are generally related. Family day also incorporates activities like dancing or making some artwork that ties in with the theme. During the knights and castle theme your offspring got to make their own personal shields with and design their family crest.
