Buying a used road bike isn’t a whole lot different than buying anything else that has been used. You need to figure out in what kind of condition it is in, as well as how it was used and if it was properly maintained. At the same time as you will probably spend less cash for it which is good as long as it is in decent shape. All of this and more will determine whether you are getting good value for your money.

Finding used bikes is typically not a problem. You are often able to even stumble on some great deals. But picking those diamonds out is truly the difficult part.

As I talk about used bikes here I am not talking about vintage bikes as that is a different topic all together. I am talking about bikes that you are looking to ride on a regular basis either for exercise, training, racing or just cruising the neighborhood. I’m talking about a bike that you would wise to buy new but can’t afford or just don’t want to lay out the cash.

First I recommend you determine whether you want to race the bike or just cruise the neighborhood. If you are thinking of doing some serious riding then I recommend a true road bike with drop handlebars but if your more into cruising a flat bar road bike is more what you’re looking for as it gives you a more comfortable upright position yet is still great on the road.

If you're really into biking and are looking for a bargain on a higher-end racing bike then buying a used road bike will probably get you there faster than trying to buy new. Because bikes tend to have a fairly long life span especially if they've been taken care of, you can often buy one that will ride like new with only a few minor repairs.

When you begin your search I recommend you start by checking out your local bike shop. You also can find a lot of used bikes online on classified sites and auction sites.

Many people looking to buy a bicycle begin by checking on eBay. And while is a great place to search I feel you need to start local. One of the things it will help you with is figuring out what size of bike you should be buying. It will also help you make the right choice of style.

But the online sources do have a very broad and varied collection of used bicycles that you would have to travel to a dozen stores to find them all. They range from old vintage bikes to the latest carbon fiber top of the line bikes that most of us can only dream of.

When looking for a used bike online it doesn’t matter whether it's from eBay, Craigslist or some other online site caution is necessary. You're going to see terms such as "hardly ridden," or "like new." The seller may be trying to be honest but these are subjective terms and don't tell you much. Photos are extremely important but there to can be used to disguise the truth. And you can’t take it for a test ride before you buy.

But buying a used road bike is a super way of saving money, especially if you are new to the sport.
