Business coaching for small business - 5 tips to using and getting the most out of one - By: Felicity Lightbody

The real secret to small business coaching is evaluating the owner's passion for the business. But let's look at some of the other critical items for success as well, more on passion later.

First is always capitalisation. Most business coaches will tell you that failure in the first five years is simply because they lack adequate financial "staying power". When contemplating a new business spend a great deal of time being realistic and honest with yourself regarding the costs of the business, advertising, equipment, supplies, bookkeeping, taxes and all the other little things that crop up every day.

Secondly, evaluate the REAL need for the business in your geographic market, find a mentor, or business coach and study all the components necessary to make the business a viable endeavour.

Thirdly, simply ask yourself and a dozen other people, often called a focus group, "Do you need this product or service?", "Is there anyone you know that will do it now ?", "What kind of a job do you want done?", and finally "What are you willing to pay for it?

Fourth, ask yourself "Do I really want to do this?" It sounds silly, but there are things that we all think are a great idea, a really good opportunity, but when we look at it up close and personally we don't want to do it ourselves. As a business grows you may have that luxury, but make no mistake, YOU are the business when you start it and it is you that will make it work or not.

Fifth, PASSION, once again listen to business coaching, and if you believe you can do it better, and you want to show the world you are the best, it carries with it an invisible signal, and shows the real passion for what you do. There is an old cliché that goes "enthusiasm is contagious" and the newest tools, the most expensive supplies, the best rates, they are secondary, and as any business coach will tell you....the degree of passion you have will help you overcome virtually any adversity that occurs because YOU are the business, and it is up to you to "infect" your employees, your customers, and everyone you come in contact with the passion to do a good job regardless of what you do, and the level of pride and certainty that you convey is what you deliver,...all the time, ...every time!
