Whether you appoint a cleaner directly or through an agency, communicating your expectations from the start will be key to building a good relationship with your cleaner.

Everyone has different standards and expectations on what is essential when cleaning a home. Make sure yours are communicated from the beginning. For instance, “I want the cupboards cleaning once a month” or “I need the blinds dusting every week”. Just being clear on your expectations will make for a much smoother relationship with your cleaner. Remember however that your cleaner is still a human being and should be treated with respect so there are some things that are unreasonable to expect from them. For instance, they might not be too happy to pet-sit for you – remember you have hired them to clean your home. If any additional responsibilities are required, you should approach them in advance about this to ensure that they are happy with the extra role and of course, they will expect payment for this. Communicate with your cleaner so that any problems can be ironed out and you will not feel like you have to stand over them and watch their every move in your home (which would also be very off-putting for the cleaner).
