If you are trying to get into professional modelling, your best weapon is a stunning portfolio. It’s an incredibly competitive field, especially when you first start out, so the portfolio needs to be of absolutely top quality.

Getting your friends to take some shots with a digital camera just won’t cut it, even if the camera is a good one and the friends know a little about photography. A professional who understands lighting, settings, and what serious modelling photos need to look like will get immeasurably better results and has the right tools for the job- cameras, filters, lighting, and sets. Get someone who specialises in photographing models rather than any old photographer, who will be used to taking portraits of babies, pets, and wholesome family groups.

Hire a professional make-up artist before the shoot. It’s not usually expensive, but make sure you like their style well in advance, so you’re comfortable with the look you will have on the day. Scan through some magazines to get ideas and plan out exactly what you want from the shoot to get the most out of the time you have available.

Vet the results of your photo shoot carefully. Every picture has to be great. Modelling agencies see hundreds of portfolios and just one image that doesn’t quite work could land your portfolio in the reject pile. If in doubt, get rid of it!

Once you have a portfolio, most hopeful models will try to get straight into an agency on the strength of it. Most won’t meet with success that way. If you are really serious about a career in modelling, it’s better to go to (and to pay for) an agency that will help you get your portfolio into an agency. These companies know how to get you into the right agency and give you the best chance of getting your foot in the door.
