Building a Wind Turbine - By: Tauqeer Hassan

Wind turbine is also called windmill. It is a device meant for easily converting wind energy into electrical energy. The blades of the windmill move because of variations in the air pressure. As the blades move, wind energy is transformed into mechanical energy which is finally converted into electrical energy and is used for running various home and office machines. Following is a step by step procedure for making a wind turbine.

Things Needed
The materials required for building this project are; ribbed cardboard, plywood, disk magnets, 3-mm dowel braces, 5-mm lead, ¼-inch circular dowels, 3 cm washers, 8 inch eye screws and 28 gauge enamel magnet wire about the length of 120 m. The tools needed are; scissors, screwdriver, compass, measuring tape, knife, electrical tape, voltmeter and white glue.

Procedure
Take a plain paper, draw a circle with a diameter of 12 inches. The circle has to be cut and folded to form a semi-circle. The folded ends of the circle have to be cut to get two halves. The two semi-circles have to be placed in such a manner that rounded portions are not on the same side. Furthermore, the top half should completely cover the lower half. The two parts have to be glued together and they have to be used to draw the design of blades on the cardboard. The windmill’s capacity to collect wind energy is directly proportional to the number of blades. This means that more blades will lock in more energy.

Use a plywood and draw a circle with a radius of 6 cm on it. The circle has to be cut out and a hole has to be drilled in its center. A 30 cm high vertical post has to be fixed about 8 cm below the hole. A foot support has to be attached at the bottom of this post.

An eye screw would have to be used for attaching a circular dowel to the horizontal frame. Using the electrical tape and cardboard, a tube has to be created that is 20-cm long and 3-cm wide. Roughly 200 coils have to be wrapped around it and 40 cm of coil has to be left at each end. The twisted wire has to be removed from the tube and it has to be secured with electrical tape. 15-mm of enamel has to be removed from each end of the coil and the current has to be tested with the help of a voltmeter. Three more coils have to be made in this manner. They have to be laid side by side in a way that all of them are in the same clockwise direction. The coils should be joined and they have to be glued to the base of the wind turbine.

Draw a circle with a radius of 6 cm on the cardboard. The circle has to be cut out and a hole has to be punched in its center. A cross has to be now drawn through the center of the circle. Place a washer on each of the four ends of the cross. The disk magnet should be placed on the washer in such a way that the north side of the magnet must be away from the washer.

Now, take a plastic bottle and it has to be used to make a tube by cutting off its top and bottom. One side of the tube should have a radius of 6-inches. The blades should be pasted on this side. It has to be ensured that the blades are evenly fanned out and sealed at one end. The tube mount has to be mounted on the vertical support that was created earlier. A hole has to be punched for the circular dowel at the opposite end of the tube. The cardboard with disk magnets has to be attached to this dowel. It has to be made sure that the magnets face the coils that are placed at the base of the wind turbine. After this, the windmill is ready.
