Building a First Aid Kit - By: Stuart Barron

If you have kids at home, then you probably know already why you need to stock on home medical supplies. Yet, even if your family is composed of all grown ups, having emergency supplies is still important, after all, you'll never really know when accidents will happen. Having the right home medical supplies can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major problem. Instead of carrying a whole lot of supplies with you everywhere, it is best to create several kits which you can store at home, in the car, or even in your bag so you never have to worry.

What home medical supplies should you have for your kit at home? Here's a basic list:
adhesive bandages in different sizes
gauze and pads in different sizes
adhesive tape
cotton balls and swabs
scissors for cutting tape
hydrogen peroxide for cleaning
an antibacterial cream
an antihistamine
cold pack
saline
disposable gloves
Also, you make sure that you have the following numbers posted somewhere handy: telephone numbers for your doctor and your children's doctors, the number of your state poison center, number of your dentist, your insurance company's and your pharmacy's.

For your car kit, make sure that your medical supplies are compact enough to fit in the glove box or seat back pocket. Store it in a resealable box to keep them clean and dry. You must have all the items listed above plus a gallon-size plastic bag which you can use as an instant ice pack and a first aid guide.

For travelers, especially those who frequently go abroad, it is important that you have a small sized first aid kit which you can put inside your bag. It must contain several medicines including an acetaminophen, hydrocortisone cream, antihistamine, an anti-diarrheal medication, antacid, and your prescription medication. You should also have your contact numbers for your doctor and your insurance company.

Make sure you go through your first aid kits every year and discard medicines and other items which are out of date. Also, remember that these items only help you treat bumps and bruises but you should always seek medical help for severe bleeding, broken bones and other serious injuries.
