Building Tenders for Boardwalk at Taronga Park Zoo - By: Corwin Smith

Taronga Park Zoo has called for Building Tenders for construction of a timber boardwalk in the middle western part of the Zoo.

Taronga Zoo was officially opened on its current site on October 7th, 1916 but its history dates back to 1884 when the first public Zoo in New South Wales opened on a site known as Billy Goat Swamp.

In 2010 Taronga Zoo retained the position as Sydney's most popular experience for the fourth year in a row. During the year ending June 2010, the Zoo received strong support from the community with nearly 1.5 million people visiting Taronga,

In the last year, the Zoos have announced amazing successes from the birth Australia’s first- ever elephant calf and the return to the wild of endangered Booroolong Frogs bred at Taronga to the first birth in Australia of a rare Francois' Langur, a leaf-eating monkey from Asia.

The Master Plan for Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos is a 12-year program to revolutionise facilities at both Zoos and expand their ability to participate in world-class conservation, education and wildlife care programs.Started in 2000, the plan is the most comprehensive rebuilding of the Zoos since Taronga opened in 1916 and Western Plains Zoo in 1977.

At Taronga Zoo, new mega-exhibits have already opened, with the amazing Australian journey that is Backyard to Bush, the fascinating riverside jungle trail of Wild Asia and the gigantic showcase of ocean wildlife, Great Southern Oceans.

Current construction includes a new Main Entry Plaza. The Main Entry Plaza completes and joins the new car park facility and bus bay with the front of the zoo. The project will improve access to animal exhibits, retail, the Sky Safari, catering services and enhance the experience of visitors entering and leaving the Zoo. It involves significant upgrading of state-listed heritage structures as well as improving the facilities and services for future generations.

The heritage-listed Main Entrance Building will be restored to its former glory, and a new retail building and café with indoor and outdoor seating will be built, along with a two level plaza where visitors can take in magnificent views of the grounds and Sydney Harbour.

The renovation of the 30-year-old Chimpanzee exhibit will deliver great facilities for a growing group that includes several strong male chimps. Incorporating new night dens and climbing structures. Some interesting innovations will be provided for visitors too.

The current Building Tenders includes construction of a timber boardwalk in the middle western part of Taronga Zoo linking the low level roadway at Snow Leopards Exhibit and the pathway at African Waterhole Exhibit via the Tahr Mountain Goat Exhibit.
